As the summer holidays begin, many UAE parents eagerly sign up their children for camps, classes, and various structured activities. While keeping kids engaged is important, health experts in the UAE are cautioning against cramming their schedules — warning that too many activities with too little downtime can take a toll on both physical and mental well-being.
Burnout is becoming common among children
Every summer, doctors across the UAE notice a pattern of children experiencing signs of burnout. Complaints range from headaches, fatigue, and disturbed sleep to irritability and even stomach aches linked to stress.
Dr. Hanan Kandil, Specialist Psychiatrist at Medcare Royal Specialty Hospital, highlights the issue: “Overscheduling of activities is a common occurrence during the UAE summer holidays. It’s actually good for children to feel bored sometimes — it encourages creativity and independent thinking.”
Why a packed schedule can backfire
· Physical and emotional overload With continuous classes and camps, children may face fatigue, mood swings, or anxiety. Even activities meant to be fun can become stressful if done without breaks.
· Loss of interest in hobbies When children are pushed too hard, they might lose enthusiasm for activities they once loved — a clear sign that they need more free time and rest.
Finding the right balance
Dr. Mamata Bothra, Specialist in Paediatrics and Neonatology at International Modern Hospital, emphasizes the need for moderation: “We often notice children becoming overwhelmed by packed schedules, resulting in poor sleep, fatigue, and emotional withdrawal. It’s important for them to have a healthy mix of structured activities and free, unstructured time.”
Tips for a healthy, happy summer
· Limit structured activities — Aim for one or two planned sessions a day, mixed with free play and family time.
· Alternate between active and calm activities — Pair sports or camps with reading, art, or simple downtime.
· Let kids help plan their schedule — Involving them ensures they enjoy their time and avoid feeling overwhelmed.
· Opt for quality over quantity — Choose meaningful activities that allow breaks, rather than stacking up multiple short camps.
For families traveling this summer
Doctors also advise being mindful of children’s health during vacations:
· Stay hydrated and encourage movement — Especially during flights, to prevent dehydration and stiffness.
· Pack a travel kit with essentials — Include medications, basic first-aid, and health supplies suited for children.
· Stick to familiar routines — Maintaining regular meal times and sleep schedules helps reduce travel stress.
Let summer be a time to recharge
Summer is not just about learning new skills but also about rest, relaxation, and letting children enjoy the freedom of unstructured play. By creating a thoughtful mix of activities and downtime, parents can help kids make the most of their holidays — refreshed and ready for the new school year.
