NASA Astronaut Dr. Don Thomas Inaugurates Ambassador International Academy’s Sky Lab

Dubai, UAE, 18 November 2025:Today, Ambassador International Academy (AIA) proudly welcomed Dr. Don Thomas, a four-time NASA astronaut, to inaugurate the school’s new Sky Lab — a pioneering STEM learning space designed to inspire the next generation of pilots, scientists, engineers and innovators.

During his visit, Dr. Thomas engaged in interactive briefings and discussions with students across multiple grades. Students participated in a focused session exploring university pathways, degree options and emerging trends in the global space sector, gaining insights into the exciting opportunities that lie ahead in the space industry of 2025 and beyond.

The inauguration marks another milestone in AIA’s mission to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world application. Known for its future-focused and experiential learning approach, AIA continues to transform education through advanced learning environments such as its Robotics and AI Lab, Product Design Studio, Graphic Design and Multimedia Lab, Rapid Prototyping Lab and now, the visionary Sky Lab. As a school where digital innovation is central to its philosophy, AIA integrates advanced technologies and personalised learning experiences to prepare students for success in a tech-driven world. The Sky Lab curriculum centres on STEMPilot education, including drone flying and design, rocket and cube satellite development, in addition to Metaverse exploration VR/XR development.

At the heart of the lab is the STEMPILOT Edustation Simulator, which transforms classrooms into interactive cockpits, allowing students to apply STEM concepts in real-time through aviation-based simulations. Learners will explore areas such as flight simulation, instrument flying, cross-country navigation, meteorology, radio telephony (RT), and air traffic control (ATC) operations. This immersive tool supports NGSS-aligned learning and fosters critical thinking, teamwork, and a passion for STEM disciplines.

“The Sky Lab is a bold step forward in our mission to inspire future innovators,” said James Lynch, Principal. “By integrating aviation, space science, and emerging technologies into our curriculum, we are equipping students with the skills and mindset to thrive in a rapidly evolving world. This initiative reflects our commitment to experiential learning and future-focused education.”

Iain Colledge, Managing Director of Bridge Education, emphasised the alignment between the school’s innovation journey and the UAE’s national education vision. “The visionary leadership of the Emirates continues to light the path for educational transformation. Guided by the Education 33 agenda, we at AIA have made strategic investments in future-proofing our learning environments. As one of Dubai’s leading IB schools, we are deeply committed to nurturing globally minded learners through innovative, inquiry-driven experiences that lead to an outstanding IB education and open doors to exceptional university opportunities worldwide. The Sky Lab represents this vision in action — a forward-thinking space that cultivates curiosity, creativity, and the essential skills our students need to thrive in tomorrow’s world.”

“I’m honoured to be part of this exciting moment at Ambassador International Academy,” said Dr. Don Thomas. “The Sky Lab is exactly the kind of initiative that inspires young minds to dream big. I encourage every student to study hard, pursue their passions, never give up, and always keep their eyes on the stars. The future of space exploration depends on the curiosity and determination of today’s learners — and I see that spark right here at AIA.”

Dr. Thomas, who holds a PhD in Materials Science from Cornell University, has logged over 1,040 hours in space across four missions aboard Space Shuttles Columbia and Discovery. His career spans roles at NASA’s Johnson Space Center and as Director of Operations at the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Russia.

Ambassador International Academy continues to lead in delivering innovative, inclusive, and globally relevant education. The Sky Lab is the latest example of its dedication to preparing students for the challenges and opportunities of tomorrow.
